DJ Equipment: Top 9 Bundles By Genre

When you buy more of something, it generally gets cheaper by the unit. That’s basic economics and the world of DJ equipment is no different. If your old gear is feeling a bit worn out, you’re looking to change format from vinyl to CDJ, CDJ to Vinyl or Controller to Vinyl, or you just want to upgrade your entire setup in one fell swoop, you can save yourself some cash by picking up a pair of turntables and mixer as part of a package deal.

Deals and bundles are a little cheaper than buying your kit individually, so you’ll save money getting it all in one go, which you can then spend on expanding your music collection and searching for those hidden bangers that really get a gig going.

Everyone has different needs. Your standard house DJ doesn’t need old school turntables just as much as a hip-hop DJ doesn’t need a miniature digital turntable. We’ve tried to group everything together by genre, so that you can quickly check out the package deals that are relevant to you. Of course, a lot of genres will have some crossover in their requirements, and when you start looking at the top-end gear, you’ll notice that various setups will perform fluently in every genre.

Check out the genres below:

Best Hip-Hop Equipment Bundle

For hip-hop, vinyl is still king. You want a traditional sound and full flexibility over effects, turntablist techniques, and scratching. Unfortunately, CDJs and MIDI controllers still don’t have the authentic scratching power that true hip-hop DJs and turntablists need. Jog wheels still have a long way to come in terms of feel, torque, and authenticity. That’s why we’re focusing on bundles with traditional turntables and simple battle mixers.

We’ve taken a lot into consideration when compiling this list, including sound quality, value, sturdiness, unique features, and extras. It was difficult to choose between two package deals from, so we decided to list them both, with the primary difference being your budget.

If You’re on a Budget:

1|Stanton T.92 USB DJ Turntable & Allen + Heath XONE:23 Mixer

The Turntables:

Stanton has been one of the top DJ turntable producers for the last few decades with some of the world’s top DJs swearing by them (Stanton Warriors even took their name from their favorite brand of the turntable). You know you’re getting a well-built turntable with little room for error and great torque when you go with Stanton, and the T.92s are no different.

One of Stanton’s most popular turntables, the Stanton T.92s live up to the high expectations that the brand’s loyal customers expect. A heavy-duty metal construction and direct-drive motor mean that when your scratching, beat juggling, and turntablist tricks really give them a beating, the turntables won’t lose torque. No matter what, these turntables will power through until the end of your set.

The Stanton T.92s feature built-in USB and S/PDIF outputs for ripping music and mixes from your vinyl records straight to your computer workstation. USB compatibility, when combined with a simple audio editor like Audacity makes recording songs a breeze, or you can use the included software for transferring and editing music.

The pitch control fader comes with a built-in Digital Signal Processor allowing for Key Lock (change the tempo without affecting the pitch), up to +/-12%. The turntable comes with two starts/stop buttons for battle mode, simply turn the deck 90 degrees to prevent the S-shaped tone arm from getting in your way when scratching and beat mixing. We would recommend purchasing some aftermarket scratch styluses, as the Stanton cartridges are not intended for heavy-duty scratching and will wear out your records over time.

The Mixer

Allen & Heath are known for producing some of the best mixers on the market. Consistently, Allen & Heath mixers output the highest sound quality and come loaded with an arsenal of professional features. Their filters are widely renowned for producing some of the most interesting effects on the market. The Xone:23 feels strong with a high build quality and comes with one of the filters that put Allen & Heath mixers both on the map and into the top DJ booths in the world. The analog voltage control filter (VCF) offers both high and low pass filters, frequency sweep and a resonance dial Allen & Heath have labeled “mild” to “wild”.

Total kill EQ dials (3-band), multiple crossfader settings and VCA faders give you a huge range of sounds and effects to enhance your turntablist set. Switches are Back-lit to enhance visibility in dark environments. An FX loop also means that you can build on this bundle by adding your own third-party FX tools. The crossfader can also be upgraded to one of Allen & Heath’s premier “innofaders”, one of the best scratch crossfader series currently available on the market. Dedicated recording outputs make keeping hold of your mixes no problem at all. Just plug the Xone:23 into your computer, open your audio editor, hit record and begin your mix. This is especially handy for upcoming DJs who might want to record their mixes to prove to promoters that they have the skills to play gigs.

Our Rating: 8/10

This bundle is an absolute bargain. It’s customizable and upgradable so it makes a perfect setup for any beginner turntablist. We’d recommend this for newer DJs that are starting to specialize in hip-hop, or any DJ wanting to make the transition from digital DJing to vinyl.

For Peak Performance:

Pioneer DJM-S9, PLX1000 & Transport Cases.

Our Rating: 8.2/10

The Turntables:

The direct-drive motor on the PLX-1000s can bring the rotation to 33⅓ rpm in under 0.3s, ensuring smooth rotation and perfect control. The feel of these turntables is unparalleled in quality. Thanks to the speed of the motor, you can perform fast-paced brake stops and starts to great effect within a turntablist set.

Heavy duty would be an understatement, the die-cast zinc chassis prevents any resonance and vibrations from affecting the quality of your sound. A 9mm thick vibration damper, on top of an 8mm thick resin, both reinforces the turntable and reduces unwanted noise, ensuring perfect sonic reproduction. This speaker provides exceptional sound quality and stability that you can take on the road and not worry about bumps and scrapes.

Tempo control allows you to change within +-8%, +-16% and +-50%. You can bring this pitch bend straight back to 0% when you need to with a handy reset button. The pitch fader has little to no delay, so your bpm responds instantly to your controls. Perfect for beat matching.

The Mixer:

The Pioneer DJM-S9 is a state of the art, battle ready, 2-channel mixer. With a configurable crossfader and a number of assignable buttons and pads, you can load sounds and effects, hot cues and samples to take your DJing to a new height. The pads are highly responsive and feel great under our fingers when we’re tapping our hot cues and loops. The colors are interchangeable depending on how you’ve assigned them in Serato to help you remember which pad does what when you’re mixing in a dark environment.

6 Beat FX buttons and 6 Serato DJ Pro FX (the software has up to 45 different FX when you download the expansion pack) allows you a huge number of possible effects. You just need to choose your favorites in Serato and map them to each button. 2 large style levers allow you to quickly trigger FX on, lock them and exit arrangements. Filter dials allow you to add a high or low pass filter to each individual channel, and when used with Serato DJ, you can add a number of filter FX such as echo, noise and pitch.

The DJM-S9 is small and lightweight and yet very sturdy. Ideal for professional DJs who tour regularly or need to take their equipment overseas. It’s strong enough to withstand the most intense scratching session and crossfader play.

The circuitry in the DJM-S9 is the same as you’d find in Pioneer’s flagship 4-channel mixer – the DJM-2000 Nexus (the industry standard mixer for all professional DJs). This means that you’re getting the most elite sound reproduction possible, with next to no noise interference. 2 built-in sound cards allow you to play back to back with other DJs seamlessly using the input switcher on the top of the mixer. You can play with both CDJs and turntables with DVS support.

The Flight Cases:

Strong, lightweight and a great fit for both the DJM-S9 and the PLX-1000s. Foam lining protects your kit throughout transport, and is even suitable against the roughest baggage handler.

This is only for the serious DJ, but if you’re beginning to take your turntablism further afield and are looking at DJing abroad, then this is a steal. As you travel further for bigger gigs, the equipment will pay itself off.

Break Beat Hardcore & Acid House

The ancestors of so many popular electronic genres, Breakbeat hardcore and Acid house are still major genres in the dance music scene today. Acid house hit the scene in the 80s and eventually split into two identifiable scenes – Breakbeat hardcore and techno. Breakbeat hardcore (also called Old School Rave), characterized by breakbeats, piano rolls, and rhythmic basslines, would eventually give birth to Jungle and other modern types.

If you mix Breakbeat hardcore or acid house, you’ll most likely have a huge collection of vinyl records from the 80s and 90s. Before the music scene went digital, these records were produced en masse, and so it can be even easier to find rare tracks in record stores on vinyl than it can be to find them online.

Staying true to old-school roots, the best DJ bundles for these genres have to utilize vinyl turntables and then a 2-channel or 4-channel mixer with great sound reproduction. The music is often so intense and loaded with interesting 303 basslines, piano riffs and drum beats that you don’t need to throw in unnecessary effects, so keeping it stripped back is ideal.

Pioneer PLX-500, DJM-S3, Shure Headphones & Presonus Monitor

Our Rating: 9/10

 PLX-500, DJM-S3, Shure, Presonus

If you’re just starting out or your old gear has just become too haggard, this all in one package is for you. Featuring the Mid-range Pioneer PLX-500s, the DJM-S3 mixer, Shure SHR550DJ headphones and Presonus monitors, you have everything you need to get set up in the world of DJing or refresh your entire setup.

As a bundle $1424.99, you’re saving yourself upwards of $200, as the entire package bought individually would cost you $750 for the turntables, $550 for the mixer, $250 for the monitors and $90 for the headphones. But the real saving comes from the equipment themselves. The PLX-500s are great value for money, as is the DJM-S3.

The Turntables:

Based on Pioneer’s leading turntable – the PLX-1000, the PLX-500 is designed to reproduce high-quality vinyl sound with little loss in signal. The internal damping reduces ambient noise and signals loss.

You can record your classic tracks via the USB cable and keep a backup copy of your vinyl collection. This is especially handy if you do decide to move from analog to digital DJing.

The 3-speed direct drive maximizes torque and keeps your turntable responsive for years to come.

The Mixer:

The DJM-S3 comes with a built-in sound card that enables you to plug it straight into Serato DJ Pro and use it straight away. No annoying downloads or confusing configuration, the DJM-S3 defines “plug-in-and-play”, especially useful for quick setup in the club. Despite its low cost, the DJM-S3 features the same Magvel crossfader as the DJM-900NXS2. The crossover feels smooth and highly responsive. Pioneer claims that the crossfader is durable for 10 million movements – whilst we haven’t had the time to put this to the test, the build quality is high enough that we can believe it.

The DJM-S3 hasn’t been loaded up with unnecessary effects but instead stays stripped back and ergonomic. The one effect that Pioneer did decide to keep, is the Filter knobs with changeable resonance.

The Monitors:

The Eris 4.5 monitors by PreSonus feature a frequency range of 70 Hz to 20’000 kHz, so they will roll out those squelchy 303 bass lines as well as some of the higher piano riffs. The Eris 4.5s are well protected, so you can push them to maximum volume without fear of your speakers blowing, just keep your mixer from redlining and you’ll be enjoying your tunes from these for years. The subwoofer is made from custom-woven Kevlar that gives a more even dispersion, whilst the tweeter is designed to project sound with a wide dispersion that should create a large optimal listening area in your studio.

This bundle fully updates your home studio and is perfect for a variety of genres as well as breakbeat hardcore and acid house, including hip-hop, drum and bass and techno.

Best Equipment Package for Techno DJs

We love Allen & Heath for mixing techno. The clear sound reproduction and minimal signal loss is great for those subtle nuances in the more intricate techno tracks, not to mention producing some of the best filter effects that are just so much fun when mixing techno.

Pioneer PLX-1000s, Allen & Heath Xone:92, Battle Mode Coffin

plx1000, xone 92, battle

The Turntables:

We’ve already mentioned the Pioneer PLX-1000s as one of the premier DJ turntables on the market, and for fear of repeating ourselves, we’ll just say this: They’re well built, reduce unwanted noise and have great torque powering them. Just try them and you’ll know what we mean.

The Mixer:

The real star of this deal is the Allen & Heath Xone:92. Regarded as one of the best mixers on the market by some, the Allen & Heath Xone:92 is famous for producing unparalleled sound quality. Even though one of the biggest sound systems, you’ll get perfect audio reproduction on the Mixer’s behalf. This is why the Xone:92 has become an industry standard.6-channels mean that you can layer a variety of classic tracks and mix seamlessly from one to another, creating a new song within the mix. A 4-band EQ allows you to isolate individual instruments and harmonies, and with the full kill on the high and low frequencies, you have unlimited control over what sounds you take from what track.

The filter on all Allen & Heath mixers is world-renowned and the Xone:92 is no different. You can customize the filter to create sound-bending effects within your mix. A variety of outputs allow your signal to be manipulated after the mixer in a MIDI controller of with various FX controllers. We also love the sturdy construction of the Xone:92. It feels strong and stable, one user even reported that he’d had his for 7 years and it still felt new.

DJ Package Deals for House Artists

House, like Techno, benefits greatly from mixers with four or more channels. Using EQs and individual channels, you can isolate frequency bands of certain songs and layer them to great effect. That’s why we chose a mixer and media player combo that utilizes 4 channels and smooth EQing with an isolating total kill feature.

Pioneer XDJ-700, DJM-750

XDJ 700

House  Bundle

The Pioneer XDJ-700 stands out with a large LCD touch screen for intuitive track selection and customization of settings. You can see detailed track information in real time, including wave forms, beat countdowns, phase meter, key analysis and more. Pioneer has decided to drop the classic CD input, saving on space and weight, and instead using USB port for audio input. Simply plug a USB compatible hard drive or USB stick, and use the LCD touchscreen to navigate your song library.

The XDJ-700 was designed with Rekordbox in mind, it can connect wirelessly to your smartphone or tablet running the Rekordbox app, as well as connecting to Rekordbox via your laptop. The XDJ-700 doesn’t feel as sturdy as some of Pioneers top-range CDJs, but at no point would we say it feels flimsy or weak. We’d recommend getting a flight case for these if you’re going to be gigging with them.

The Mixer:

The real star of the show and the reason this DJ bundle is ideal for House DJs. The Pioneer DJM-750 is a beast when it comes to sound quality, built-in FX, and compatibility with iOS devices. The Pioneer DJM-750 is a 4 channel mixer that borrows design elements from the Pioneer DJM-2000NXS2 (one of the industry standard mixers). The circuitry inside is designed to optimize sound quality, the DJM-750 uses a 64-bit digital signal processor, 32-bit D/A processor and 32-bit A/D processor, so both analog and digital sound makes it to the speakers without any unwanted noise or signal loss.

The EQs and faders feel smooth which helps you create seamless mixes between the various channels. All four of the frequency bands have a smooth curve as well as a total kill feature, allowing you to isolate frequency ranges on each song and layer them on top of each other. Take two recognizable house songs and mash them up to give your crowd something fresh and exciting. The 2 FX units – beat FX and sound color FX give you a plethora of filters, delays, echoes, reverb, vinyl break, sweep, space, and flanger. The beat FX are all in sync with the BPM meaning your mix isn’t affected by your effects.

The DJM-750 has an independent send/return feature built in so you can connect a variety of FX units on iOS devices. Simply plug a USB into the port, load up your FX app or sampler, and you’re ready to go. We love this for mixing live house because we don’t need to carry bulky samplers or FX pedals, just an iPad or even a phone. The one issue we had with the DJM-750, was that it lacks MIDI capability and isn’t fully supported for Serato DJ software. To use the DJM-750 with Serato you need to buy the Rane SL2/3/4 USB interface. These interfaces are upwards of $350, so if you want to use Serato you’ll have to pay a bit more.

Features: (Stand-alone)

Our Rating: 8/10

Whilst we love gear from Pioneer, the lack of MIDI capability is a big sacrifice for us, so we’d consider spending a little more money and getting one of the other bundles listed here. Seeing as a decent USB interface will cost you upwards of $350, you may as well raise the price of this bundle to $2850.

Best DJ Package Deal for EDM

Pioneer DDJ-SZ2 with Harbinger V1015 DJ Package

Our Rating: 8.5/10

This DJ bundle is comprised of the incredible Pioneer DDJ-SZ2 controller and two Harbinger V1015, 15-inch active speakers. This is the first time we’ve chosen a package deal featuring a laptop ready MIDI-controller over the more common and industry standard CDJs & Mixer. The reason we’ve chosen this setup specifically for EDM is because of the wide range of effects, Serato capability, pumping speakers and everything else you need for a full studio revamp. The portability of the Pioneer DDJ-SZ2 means that you can take it to every gig, and if the venue’s equipment fails or any other problems occur, you’re still ready to go.

This package deal is all inclusive with everything you need to upgrade your home studio as well as take paid gigs in a multitude of environments. The package includes:

  • The Pioneer DDJ-SZ2 Controller
  • 2 Harbinger V1015 Active Speakers
  • DJ Laptop stand and shelf
  • 2, 20ft XLR Cables from Gear One
  • 2 Heavy-duty steel speaker stands
  • 1 Pair of Tascam TH-300X Studio Headphones.

The Pioneer DDJ-SZ2 Controller

Designed with Pioneers professional clientele in mind, the DDJ-SZ2 is built around the industry standard CDJ2000NXS media players, meaning that you’ll move from your own controller to industry standard gear with no nasty surprises. The DDJ-SZ2 has all of the same features as the original DDJ-SZ, as well as most of the features on Pioneer’s new DDJ-RZ. The improvements come in when you look at the built-in sequencer, designed to integrate perfectly with Serato’s remixing tool – FLIP. You’ll notice that the jog wheel is more responsive and accurate, whilst the performance pads feel intuitive and user-friendly.

It was a close race between the DDJ-SZ2 and the DDJ-RZ, but the deciding factor was the software included. Serato has long been an industry standard and the chosen software of world-renowned DJs. As we previously mentioned that the DDJ-SZ2 is just a stone’s throw from the CDJ2000NXS, utilizing Serato means that the DDJ-SZ2 is the perfect controller to practice live sets when at home. The DDJ-SZ2 also comes with Pitch n’ Time and Serato FLIP expansion packs.

Harbinger Vari V1015 15-Inch Active Speakers

The Harbinger Vari V1015 active loudspeakers deliver 400 watts of efficient Class-D amplification that are sure to floor anyone in the room if you turn them all the way. If you don’t know much about amplifiers, Class-D amps became the industry favorite several years ago, due to their astounding efficiency, lack of interfering noise, lighter weight and affordability.

The 2-way full range speaker system utilizes a 15-inch sub woofer and a 1.35-inch compression driver, alongside a 2-channel mixer and built in EQ. An advanced limiter with clipping indicated shows you when you’re pushing the speakers too hard and protects both your speakers, your ears and the sound quality. XLR outputs allow you to link as many speakers together as you want, allowing you to use two in the home studio as monitors, or link them together when you take your mix to the world.

2 Heavy Duty Steel Tripod Speaker Stands

This package comes with 2 steel stands, finished in black. These allow you to properly place your speakers to allow for maximum sound dispersion. The tripods fold into a neat package for easy transport to your gigs and parties.

2, 20ft XLR Cables

If you’ve been gigging a lot, you’ll know all about decent XLR cables. XLR cables are auto-locking, meaning that your cable will never be pulled out mid-set as well as having the strength to survive even the most rigorous gigging.

These XLR cables from Gear One have amazing wiring that keeps your signal clean. Whilst you might not need the speakers in this package for playing gigs, it’s always a good idea to keep spare cables with you.

Tascam TH-300X Studio Headphones

Tascam’s TH-300X are designed for producers and musicians in the studio, which makes them perfect for DJing. A full frequency range gives you clear, unaltered sound. The closed back design seals around the ear, preventing microphone feedback and confusion of sound. We also found these headphones to be incredibly comfortable.

DJ Laptop Stand and Shelf

The DR Pro DRDJLS1 is a sleek, adjustable stand for your laptop that either stands independently or by clamping to a table or flight case. Both the height and width of this stand is easily adjustable and can be done on the fly by loosening the adjusting dials.

Perfect for a laptop, and even holds a removable shelf to keep your digital interface, lighting controller, effects sampler or any other hardware, out of the way. The stand is easily collapsible for transporting to and from the venue and stores neatly away.

All in all, this package is ideal for any EDM DJ who plays a variety of venues that might differ in equipment. The controller is also lightweight and portable enough that it can be easily taken on a plane or across country.

Our Rating: 8.5/10

We love this package, especially the portability of the controller and Guitarcentre’s attention to detail (everyone needs more XLR cables in their lives), the headphones sound great and the DDJ-SZ2 is one of the most fun controllers we’ve played with! The only disappointment is that the Speakers are maybe slightly too loud for the studio, and unless you run a full mobile DJ system, there’s not much need for them on tour.

Drum and Bass Equipment Package

Denon DJ Prime Series Bundle, 2 x SC5000 Players, X1800 Mixer

Our Rating: 9.5/10

A lot of top DJs are trading in the traditional Pioneer CDJ2000 Nexus in favor of these bad boys. Over the last few years Denon have been adding so many extra features to their media players that Pioneer risk getting left behind. So much so, that it’s even sparking arguments on DJ forums online. The Denon SC5000 Prime Media Players have the ability to play 2 songs on one deck, giving this bundle the playing power of a 4 deck setup, perfect for those DnB double (and even triple) drops.

The Media Players

The Denon DJ SC5000 Prime Media player is perfect for any Drum and Bass DJ looking to upgrade their studio to beyond the industry-standard. The built-in 7-inch high definition display benefits from a multi-touch screen to quickly navigate your music library. The screen can show crucial information regarding your songs including:

  • The file format (so you can guess the quality/compression)
  • Name & Artist
  • Preferences
  • Shortcuts to the most useful features (layer color, sync mode, cue/loop quantisation etc)

The world’s first media player to analyze music music files, allowing it to accurately beat-grid and identify music key internally, the DJ SC5000 helps you organize your songs according to your mix. This might be unfortunate for Harmonic Mixing Software – Mixed in Key – as their entire business model has just been incorporated as a single feature on this deck.

The Denon DJ SC5000 has 8 assignable performance pads which felt solid and sturdy whilst we set them to trigger cues, loops, slices, rolls and other pre-mixer effects. As soon as you open the box, you’ll notice the 8-inch metal jog wheel, which features a HD central display and RGB color that every other DJ will be drooling over.

Most media types you can think of can be played by the SC5000, including lossless audio formats such as WAV, ALAC and even FLAC. When you run a FLAC file through the 24-bit/96kHz audio outputs, no CD player in the world will match its sound quality. Perfect for those deeper, dark basslines. As we mentioned earlier, the SC5000 allows a dual layer function, each layer having its own dedicated output. This means you can play four tracks on only two decks. This is ideal for riskier mixes and testing out possible mash-ups before you send the signals to the speakers.

The SC5000 is a little more ergonomic than some of its primary competitors (The CDJ-2000NXS2), with a slightly larger build and less buttons, more evenly spread. But despite its relatively large size, the SC5000 feels lightweight and portable.3 USB connections sit at the front of the media player (where you would previously expect to find the non-existent CD player), alongside a single SD card reader. Denon know that CDs are becoming a thing of the past, they lack the charm of vinyl records and aren’t as easy to use, store and cost more than SD cards or USB hard drives.

LAN outputs allow you to link up to four SC5000s together, perfect for B2Bs and DJing alongside other artists. The LAN outputs make music sharing, digital networking and communication possible between the decks.

The Mixer

The Denon DJ X1800 Prime DJ Mixer was designed with the new Denon DJ SC5000 in mind. They integrate perfectly together with beautiful touches such as the mixer’s cue lights synchronizing color with the SC5000. The SC5000 delivers real time information regarding the file being played to the mixer, allowing 100% accuracy of the tempo and sweep FX, which sets this combination leagues apart from its competitors, especially for Drum & Bass which is famously difficult to pinpoint an exact BPM. It also has an “on-air” mode, which illuminates active decks when the crossfader is open!

4 channels with phono and line input means you can link multiple decks to this mixer, and when used in combination with the DJ SC5000, your possibilities are raised even further. The X1800 delivers impeccable audio quality with 24-bit/96kHZ outputs that sound fantastic with any sound system.

The X1800 has a comprehensive set of controls and effects that you can harness to manipulate the songs and elevate your mix. The new “Flex-fader” crossfader design gives you an incredible versatility, everything from smooth blending to intense scratch sessions. The EQs have total kills on all frequency bands, allowing you to isolate different frequency ranges and reorganize songs, mashing multiple tracks within each other.

A dedicated BPM FX section (not dissimilar from the Pioneer Beat FX) gives you control over effects such as echo, noise, and reverb. All effects are matched to the rhythm of your tracks to ensure a smoother manipulation. Dual USB connections allow you to connect third-party DJ software from an iOS device or MIDI controller, giving you a plethora of sampling and effects options. You can even connect live synthesizers to add an interesting “on-the-fly” element to your mix.

Our Rating: 9.5/10

This package would get a solid 10/10, the only downside here is the price. This is the most expensive bundle we’ve listed. Of course, the quality of this bundle is unparalleled, but the retailer is in the United Kingdom, so after shipping, you can expect this price to rise even further. However, we’ve listed them as standalone which you can get from the States so it all really depends on your locale.

Best DJ Package for Trance

Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol F1 and Kontrol S4 MK2 Bundle

Traktor Bundle

We picked out this bundle mostly partly because of the price and partly because of the endless possibilities you have with the Controller and Traktor F1 combination. The four channel controller allows you to play complex melodies and mix tracks on the go, whether you’re on a beach party in Goa, deep in a secret woodland festival or a dilapidated warehouse. The Traktor F1 just plugs in and allows you to control a wide variety of effects and samples on the fly. Without further delay, let’s take a look at this package:

The Controller

Custom built for Traktor Pro Software, the Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S4 DJ controller harnesses an elite 4-channel mixer, a premium built-in 24-bit/96kHz sound-card, ergonomic controller design, customizable effects units and the premier software – Traktor Pro S4. Ideal for any DJ looking for portability in their DJ setup, the Traktor Kontrol S4 delivers professional features, user-friendliness and an intuitive design.

The Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S4 controller allows you to navigate Traktor software with ease. The electromagnetic jog wheels feel responsive and accurate, whilst the sample decks, both effects units, and two deck control sections can be assigned to any of the four software decks in Traktor Pro DJ.

The controller’s spacious layout and durable rotary knobs give you an accurate response both visually and by touch. The controller feels both spacious whilst packing in every basic feature that you could want, all in a slim and sleek space that’s easy to transport with you from party to party. When you combine this portable controller with the Traktor F1, you have more controls and features than you’ll ever need, still in a small space. Perfect if the club’s equipment fails on you.

Getting set up with this package takes no time at all. The Traktor Pro S4 software (reworked from the flagship Traktor Pro program, comes fully integrated and has been developed specifically for the Native Instruments S4 Controller. You just need to plug this controller into your Mac or PC and you’re ready to go.

The faders feel solid and well-built on the mixer section. Cue buttons, illuminated level meters, high-quality EQs for isolating frequency bands and a filter control knob for each channel give you full control over your tracks and allow you to manipulate the sound during a mix from one melodic track to another. The filter has two settings: the standard Traktor style and one based on the Xone line of mixers by Allen & Heath.

The layout was created by DJs for optimal mixing, keeping ergonomics and user-friendliness in mind. Native Instruments claims that some of the world’s biggest DJs had direct input to the design, so you know it’s been built for real DJs.

The audio interface in the Traktor Kontrol S4 controller is the same as you’d find in any of Native Instruments’ products, including their award-winning DJ sound cards. The interface is powerful and produces exceptional sound quality. You can easily integrate external turntables, media players, MIDI controllers, instruments, effects boxes, microphones and samplers into your mixes.

The Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol F1 DJ Controller:

Traktor Kontrol F1 has been designed specifically for controlling the Remix Decks in Traktor Pro. The F1 gives you the freedom to move away from your laptop during your set, launching clips and stems from a more tactile hardware system. Switch between 64 tracks, loops, stems and samples on each deck at the press of an assigned pad or button. This is perfect for Trance DJs with their own produced sounds to leave their signature on a set. If you’ve got the iconic vocal sample that takes people out of this world, then you can fire it whenever you want, on the fly.

The F1 controller comes pre-loaded with approximately 4 GB of sounds and samples. We prefer to record and produce our own samples and then assign them to triggers. One of the most interesting features of the F1 is that you don’t always need to import your loops and samples, but simply capture them from your live set. If you have a really interesting loop at some point in your set, and you want to drive it home with your audience, record it to the F1 controller and reintroduce it at the appropriate moment throughout your set. This causes a memorability to the mix and keeps everything consistent with a single theme.

The sixteen sample pads are RGB multi-colored and illuminated to help you manipulate your mix even in the darkest environments, and the ergonomic faders feel strong and responsive to the touch. Four dedicated filter knobs give you great control over the Remix Deck slots as well as Traktor’s FX units.

Our Rating: 8/10

When it comes to an all-inclusive DJ package, this bundle is fantastic. It’s portable enough to take with you to the club in case of an emergency, and you can always use the house’s gear alongside the F1 for your own customized samples. In the studio, you have a multitude of functions to practice your mix with, and both the S4 and the F1 are easily integrated with other hardware, so when it’s time to upgrade, you don’t have to mess around trying to sell your old gear.

Our Chosen Bundle For Trip-Hop/Lo-Fi DJs

One of the most important things in any Trip-Hop or Lo-Fi setup is premium sound quality. You don’t necessarily need a wide array of effects and filters that will only distract you from the crackling, deep, downtempo beats that draw so many to these two genres. This is why we’ve chosen a relatively basic MIDI controller (as more recent genres, you’ll more likely find trip-hop and Lo-fi songs online as opposed to in vinyl format), and some premier studio monitors.

As a result, we’ve been able to find a bundle that is much more affordable than many of the other packages we’ve seen so far. Here it is:

Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S2 mk2 + KRK RP6 Bundle

The Controller:

Based on the original Traktor Kontrol S2, the Traktor Kontrol S2 mk2 by Native Instruments has been slightly updated with a small selection of new features added.

The Kontrol S2 mk2 comes with a license for Traktor Pro 2, hardware registration and all the necessary cables. The buttons are the same style as the extremely popular Maschine and Kontrol X1, and the effects and pitch aren’t very different from the Traktor Kontrol S2. It reminds us of the old adage – “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

One thing they have fixed, however, is the introduction of metal plates on the S2 mk2 jog wheels. They feel lighter and more secure, and the touch-sensitivity feels responsive. The knobs respond well, none of them feeling cheap or overly weighty, though they do feel slightly small.

In comparison to the S4, the S2 mk2, is a lot lighter and much smaller, with a lot of excess features trimmed. For a lot of turntablism you might want to avoid the S2 mk2, but for simple mixing, recording and listening to your favorite lo-fi tracks, the S2 mk2 is fantastic. It utilizes the same great audio interfaces as other Native Instruments hardware (24-bit 96/kHz audio interface) for optimal sound reproduction.

The Speakers:

KRK systems are one of the most respected producers of studio monitors in the world today. They have been called state of the art by some DJs and producers and are often quoted in interviews as some artists go to brand of speakers. They focus on a natural and balanced spectral response with minimal distortion and fantastic imaging. This design quality allows recording artists and DJs to hear every nuance of a song being reproduced.

KRK’s RP6 powered studio monitors offer high-quality performance and exact accuracy so you can hear the minor details in your mixing, and can be sure that your hearing the same, if not more than your audience is hearing through the sound system. The RP6 studio monitors consist of a 1” soft dome tweeter for the high frequencies and a 6” glass-aramid composite woofer to deliver the bass. The monitors can reach very high frequencies (up to 35kHz), deliver exceptional vocal clarity and an extended bass response.

The propriety bi-amped, class A/B amplifier gives you a sound pressure level of up to 107dB, making these monitors not only clear but loud as well. The ROKIT waveguide is designed to evenly disperse sound waves and ensure perfect reproduction in the listening position. The front-firing bass port allows you to position the speakers at multiple places without any diffraction distortion.

Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S2 mk2:

  • 24-bit/96kHz audio interface.
  • Upgraded jog wheel with aircraft grade aluminum.
  • Comes with flagship Traktor software.
  • Plug in and play with Traktor DJ software for iPhone and Ipad.
  • Supports new Flux mode for instant remixes.
  • Ergonomic layout.
  • 4 dedicated hot cue buttons.
  • Signal to noise ratio of 105dB or more.
  • Frequency response 20hZ to 40kHz.

KRK RP6 Studio Monitors:

  • Bi-amped, Class A/B amplifier giving a large headroom and minimal distortion.
  • Highly tailored waveguide designed to deliver incredible imaging.
  • 1-inch soft-dome tweeter gives amazing clarity and an extended response up to 35kHz.
  • High-frequency adjustment allows you to tailor the tweeter to your personal taste.
  • Lightweight, glass-aramid composite subwoofer delivers a clear mid-range and tight bass response.
  • Low-frequency adjustment allows you to tailor the monitors to your specific taste and allows for room adjusting.
  • The front-firing port extends low frequency and can be adjusting according to the room.
  • A low resonance enclosure minimizes distortion and colorization.
  • Multiple audio input connectors (XLR, ¼”, RCA) for universal connectivity in any performance environment.
  • Factory installed foam pad provides isolation between the speaker and surface.
  • Peak SPL : 107dB
  • Frequency Response 38Hz – 35kHz (+/- 1.5 dB)

Our Rating: 8/10.

For the price this bundle is amazing. Every DJ should have a pair of KRK Rokit RP6 studio monitors in their DJ setup when practicing at home, and for on the road mixing, the Traktor Kontrol S2 mk2 delivers a fantastic audio response and clarity of sound. It’s lightweight and portable for on-the-fly chill out mixing at any location.

That rounds out our bundle’s list. Rave on!
